Chocoladefabriek – Tongeren
Residential project in a former chocolate factory on an industrial heritage site. A gently undulating landscape was created in the central forecourt, where a lawn was laid, as well as natural flower meadows.
In addition, there is a generous area for an interesting native tree collection with deciduous trees. Clean-lined vegetable gardens have also been created here with the help of the gardener of Hex Castle.
Stelcon slabs with metal edge trim were used for the paving of the paths and private terraces, in keeping with the industrial character of the site.
Also, the existing paving with mosaic paving stones has been carefully dug up and reused in new paving around the former entrance building.
Leisure-wise, there is a communal pétanque lane and picnic area by the terrace, behind the entrance building. The beds around this terrace are planted with prairie vegetation consisting of perennials and ornamental grasses.
Throughout the project site, street furniture (benches, picnic area, bike stands and parking/access control barriers) have been installed and an adventure playground was built in the central square.
By the water, a wadi was dug to catch all the rainwater from the site and carry it away to the nearby brook in a controlled manner.
On the side of Neremstraat, a long, narrow hedge structure lines the edge of the plot, forming a green screen between the central square and the road.
Adjoining the project site, BuroLandschap also created a design for the bank zone around the brook, including a seating and barbecue area.
